Retail

Research conducted to prepare downtown Canton's master plan (by Winter & Co.) projects growth in aggregate income in Canton of approximately $102 million by 2006. Retail spending is expected to increase proportionally. If growth in consumer spending is calculated from income growth and adjusted for inflation, theoretically downtown Canton could support approximately 135,000 square feet of new retail space.

Currently, there is 120,000 square feet in downtown Canton concluding there is unmet demand for new retail options.

Listed among the plan's key revitalization strategies is the creation of a destination retail and entertainment center featuring specialty retail, dining and entertainment positioning this "retail core" as an exciting place, distinct from the suburban retail experience.

New downtown retail could take advantage of:

  • A captive retail audience of more than 6,500 downtown workers.
  • The anticipated retail residential community, with an average age of 36 and median income of nearly $33,000 annually, who will live and work downtown.
  • Unique amenities offered by downtown districts such as a diverse and eclectic mix of restaurants, entertainment, banking and other services that can't be duplicated in the suburbs.
  • Major scheduled developments include a convention center, sports/recreation facility, cultural and entertainment district, and community market.
